GENERAL ALBUM INFORMATION
Raven Records was an Australian independent record label established in 1979 by music historian and journalist Glenn A. Baker, together with Kevin Mueller and Peter Shillito. Unlike most independent labels of the period, Raven was created primarily to recover, document and reissue recordings from the past, rather than to develop contemporary artists. It provided an outlet for material considered too specialised or collector-oriented to attract the interest of the major record companies.
Operating in a similar field to Rhino in the United States, Charly and Edsel in the United Kingdom, and Line in Germany, Raven entered into exclusive licensing agreements with Australian companies including Festival, EMI, CBS, PolyGram, RCA, Albert Productions and W&G Records. Internationally, it licensed material from labels such as Capitol, Mercury, Pye, Impact, United Artists, Audio Fidelity and Decca. Raven also dealt directly with prominent Australian artists to secure previously unreleased recordings of particular interest to collectors.
Raven's earliest releases focused on rare Australian recordings from the beat and garage-rock era. In 1980, the label expanded into long-playing archival compilations, establishing the format that would become central to its catalogue.
A central part of the label's appeal was its claim that Raven offered reissues of exceptional value, "prepared by collectors for collectors".
Raven went on to become one of Australia's longest-running and most highly regarded specialist reissue labels. It ceased operations in April 2017, after thirty-eight years.
The Beatles Talk Downunder was issued in November 1981, in mono. It was one of Raven's earliest LP releases and was the audio accompaniment to Glenn A. Baker's illustrated book The Beatles Down Under: The 1964 Australia & New Zealand Tour (Sydney: Wild & Woolley Press, 1981).
It follows the Beatles' Australasian journey in roughly chronological order, beginning with a message recorded in England in March 1964 and concluding with their farewell interviews at Sydney Airport on 1 July 1964. The original LP runs for nearly an hour.
The album was pressed by Astor Records mere weeks before the company closed its manufacturing facility for good.
The album was licensed internationally. A British issue appeared on Goughsound GP 5001 in 1982. There was also a US issue on PVC Records PVC 8911, a Canadian issue on Passport Records PL 5003, and a Japanese issue on Trio Records PK-20001, pressed on translucent green vinyl.
A later digital reissue divided the programme into twelve location-based sections—England, Hong Kong, Darwin, three Sydney segments, Adelaide, Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland/Dunedin and Brisbane—but those digital divisions do not necessarily correspond exactly to the bands on the original LP.
